CNP #24 Extended Show Notes

We had a great 2nd show at Mezo's Juke Join last night for the Comedy Open Mic. After Daniel's set, me and Ryan decided to try an improv set riffing off each other which turned into an hour long affair. Several other people got up and tried material. We hope you all keep coming back and try for some stage time in the future!  On the 24th episode of the Coastal Noise Podcast (recorded @ Mezo's before the comedy show) we had an enriching conversation and were joined by Greg Slade toward the last quarter. Be sure to check out the last few minutes of the episode to hear about the guy who caught the Bubonic Plague from his pet cat! At first, discussed music and comedy, along with new ideas for crafting material at future shows. In the world of music, The Grammys happened recently, where Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl, and Queens Of The Stone Age closed out the show only to be cut short by commercials. Reznor and was not happy to say the least.
Farmers Fridge is now selling salads in vending machines in Chicago and has a 5 star Yelp rating.
A chunk of the show drifted to video game business models of the future with hard drive space and online distribution in mind, spurred on by the announcement of Vietnamese game creator Dong Ngyen who is pulling his popular app, "Flappy Bird", which was designed with old school Mario themes. From that, we mention Payday 2, which is a first-person, 4 player co-op shooter where team mates break into banks and stores for million dollar pay offs. Check it out if your looking for a good game to get into. Me and my brother are trying to assemble a sold team to break bread with, feel me? We also talk Boarderlands 2, GTA V, The new UFC with the EA takeover. Before closing in the segment, we talk more about the business model big game developers are taking to make the most profits. We also talk game ratings for kids and trending TV shows.
Greg Slade joins us, and we reference G. Love and Special Sauce's song "Lay Down The Law". Click the song title to give it a listen, highly recommended. We start up on social communications: Aggressive facebook Interactions. We talk about how the brain registers information when browsing the web versus reading physical material such as books and magazines. Wired Magazine did an article a few years back that showed more scattered brain recognition patterns when heavily depending on strictly internet based sources. We explore why physical materials may be better for cognitive enhancement and in what ways. We then discuss taking positive action in our personal lives: Right speech, self motivation (cleaning, doing the laundry), cutting negative people out your life, establishing successful routines for organization.
The last and most intense story  is at the closing, about a man from Bend, Oregon who caught the Bubonic Plague from his pet cat, ended up in a coma, and lost several limbs as a result. Doctors say he is lucky to be alive. Your not going to want to miss this story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: MEZO'S MONDAY MIC FOR COMEDY WILL BE MONDAY FEB. 8TH AT 8PM
NEW TRACKS BEING ADDED TO THE MUSIC PAGE

Great show last night with Daniel Kavanagh and Ryan Vanskiver (listen here at the Coastal Noise Podcast page). We talked about a butt ton of cool stuff ranging from actors, The Pope's "Man of The Year" award, Kohlrabi and Krokodil, mind of plants, the recent ice over in Biloxi, space travel, all the way to presidential elections in mainstream media.

Starting out, we loosened up talking about film and a few great actors in the Hollywood scene. Bill Murray was a subject of interest as we discussed his role in Zombie Land that involves him getting shot after he, along with Woody Harrelson and other key actors, use green leafy plants to reenact the famous library scene from GHOSTBUSTERS. We also talked about Murray's roles in other movies that Ryan has scene and what he has on Netflix these days. Going off that, we talked a little more about Woody Harrelson's role as a social activities. Harrelson is an outspoken individual for the hemp movement that seeks to re-legalize the textile product for American production. Harrelson has a documentary called GRASS and has also narrated for such documentaries as ETHOS, which explores failed environmental, democratic, and personal practices. Check out the guys Wiki page here. This is one Hollywood figure who isn't hiding behind fame. Other actors discussed were Jonah Hill in his great supporting roles of Money Ball, Wolf of Wall Street, and This Is The End, as well as Matthew Mcconaughey in Dazed in Confused, Wolf of Wall Street, Tropic Thunder and his infamous incident of playing bongos in his house, naked and baked.

New York Times recently released their "Year In Review" articles, naming Pope Francis the man of the year. Looking into the topic online, we discovered that he recently released some doves as a sign of peace, which were then attacked by a seagull and a crow...wow...talk about lame birds.

The new trendy vegetable Kohlrabi is taking root in America, as chefs everywhere are beginning to take note of it's high levels of iron, potassium, and fiber. Transitioning from Kohlrabi, we moved to Krokodil from a rant on the dangerous of smoking and chewing tobacco. Krokodil is a product claimed to be several times stronger than heroin that causes skin abnormalities in the form of scales and sever blisters. It started out as a serious problem in Russia and is now finding it's way to parts of Europe and a few cities in the U.S. God help us all. Just type in Krokodil online and looks at the pictures that come up. People are literally losing their skin from this shit. It's ridiculous.

We explored the possibilities of plant consciousness with me talking about videos I've watched where machines are attached to plants which create sounds based on the plants "output" (whatever that is), which makes music notes, giving the impression that the plants are "singing". We talked gardening. How hard is it, what to grow, the responsibilities, etc. I talk a little on the value of peppers and how there is more vitamin C in peppers than any other vegetable, with products like kale, cauliflower and broccoli being close by. All of these edibles contain more vitamin C than orange juice. To see the blog I wrote recently about this topic in depth, visit the article HERE.

Biloxi had a recent ice over last week, with a recorded accident tally of almost 50 vehicles. Bridges were so slippery, that sand was dumped over many bridges throughout the area to keep cars from crashing. Now, as I write, dozens of schools through the state are sending out notices that they will be shutting down for a particularly nasty storm that will bring freezing temperatures onto the coast.

After a brief announcement about the Mezo's Monday Open-Mic that is going on next week (Monday Feb. 8th, 8PM) for stand up comics, we watched a video of Richard Branson's "SpaceShipTwo" which will take anyone who can pay the $250,000 ticket into the edges of spaces. This was truly incredible to watch and talk about. The clip will be posted to the Coastal Noise Video section for your enjoyment. We're in the future, like, right now. From this, we riffed on what it will be like in the future as time shares are advertised for the moon. Condos and real estate will be the gold mine industry of the next century. We had a good laugh thinking about how American's will likely pay the quarter of a million dollars to go the planet's limits, only to sit starring into the tiny screen of a dumb movie provided by the flight. Yes...I think some of us are that lost in our lives...

Operation Northwoods. What the hell is it? You have to listen to find out.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, the Russian military man who invented the AK-47, dies at the age of 94, his famous weapon from the days of World War II still holds value in the realm of war. In other related news, all U.S. troops are set to return home by the end of the year, which will end the longest ar that America has ever been engaged in since it's beginning in 2001. Will the pull out hold true? We will see...

In closing, we discussed the possibilities of a New America, where presidential elections are based online instead of on television. We focus our conversation around Ron Paul and his manipulated image through major news outlets. If you want to get an idea of how wack our news programming is, have a listen to this part of the podcast. It is both laughable as it is shocking.

In this episode of the Coastal Noise Podcast Doug gives us his thoughts on Tito's from Austin Texas. We talk about Houston's lousy traffic followed by a little bit of BMX and snowboarding. One of the big stories comes from ABC's 20/20 special on a father who recruited his son and daughter to rob banks. The story follows the dad who goes down hill with drugs and money problems and then conveniences his 20 year old son and 18 year old daughter to take part in a series of heists. I tell everyone how the man planned the robberies, how they got caught, and what happened afterwards.          Revisiting previous themes from the last podcast, we talk about the Paleo Diet, what foods are safe and unsafe, grass-fed meats, fruit moderation, and a couple of our own experiences, as well as personal experiments in our eating regimens. Doug talks about new government policies that are being pitched around in regards to antibacterial products such as hand soaps, dishwasher liquids, and feeds for animals.
Chris Gillespie, studying film in Arizona, drops-in and shifts the conversation to Bond movies, talking about how the older films contrast the latest installments in the franchise, with a greater since of misogynous lead character actions. We dwell on Bond topics for a while before moving to how movies are rated. What makes the difference between an R rated film and an NC-17? We also talk movies like Fargo, 12 Years A Slave, Eyes Wide Shut, This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Super Size Me, Super High Me, among others. Chris also mentions a new podcast by Doug Benson. Here is the latest episode featuring Joey "Coco" Diaz. We talk a little more about this podcast and others in the next episode with Ryan Vanskiver, Lyle Stephens, and Daniel Kavanagh where we talk at length about stand-up comedy.

CNP #16 EXTENDED Show Notes

In the Coastal Noise Podcast episode #16, Daniel and Jeff talk about their recent trip to New York City. They talk about city's legendary water quality and great food they had from places such as Pies and Thighs . They also talk about some of the art they saw, including a strange indoor maze made of metal, whose construction, due to its weight, took the lives of several men to bring to its final construction.
We then transitioned to a lost topic from the previous Coastal Noise Podcast episode 15, where technical difficulties lead to the loss of a section in the show where we talked about pro athletes marketing junk food to kids. Studies from Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University are showing that foods that are energy dense, nutrient poor are some of the biggest products promoted by professional athletes. Worse yet, the viewers who see these advertisements for pizzas, chips, candy bars, snack foods, sodas and other sugary drinks, are primarily kids aged 12-17. Almost all endorsed beverages (93%) got %100 percent of their calories from sugar. Seeing as kids want to be pro athletes almost more than anything when they grow up, the results from the research are disturbing.
Continuing on with health related topics, we discussed raising livestock and health standards in America's meat industry. We talked a little bit about the Paleo Diet (see link for Dr. Loraine Cordain's website) and what information I've been collecting on it, as well as what steps I'm taking to impalement this eating regimen in my own diet. I plan to have own two new guests soon, Anthony Lizana and Doug Morrison, who both have experience with Paleo eating and can give us more information on this trending diet. The diet of past may very well be the diet of our future.
I left my seat in the middle of the show to get some water and, while I was away, discovered that Paul Walker had died. No one else at the table had heard yet. As an aside, I told the guys about the 92 year old Texas woman who kicked a burglar in the face when he tried to break into her house, not expecting to find her there. When things got hairy, the man tried to kidnap her and, while forcing on one of her shoe, she dominated his face with her heel. She plans to buy another gun for her home. "Maybe next time, I'll use it". You go granny. Other news included Jeff's pineapple is fully grown and is decked out with Christmas lights. Spoiler alert though: He's gonna eat it real soon. In spirit of the announcement, I looked up some interesting facts about pineapples during the show.
Camal Petro arrived on the scene, and since he's the sports guy, I had to stop to talk about the Alabama vs. Auburn game that had just concluded an hour and a half ago. The group talked about how incredible it was and what it meant in the continuing season. Camal Petro wrote an article and photographed the recent Mississippi Gulf Coast Marathon held at Stennis Space Center yesterday for the Sun Herald. You can see the full story here.
Closing discussions included Black Friday Injuries and Death counts, which have been tallied up over the last several years and Jacob Skrmetti's plans to record a home album with his fellow band mates at Mississippi State University. CNP #16 is available here. Thanks for listening everyone, and Merry December!
